Aaron - The Leader Who Followed

May 19th, 2010 by admin | 0

Aaron was called along with his brother Moses to lead the children of Israel. Specifically he was called to be God's and Moses' mouth piece.

Exodus 4:14-16 "Then the Lord became angry with Moses. “All right,” he said. “What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he speaks well. And look! He is on his way to meet you now. He will be delighted to see you. 15 Talk to him, and put the words in his mouth. I will be with both of you as you speak, and I will instruct you both in what to do. 16 Aaron will be your spokesman to the people. He will be your mouthpiece, and you will stand in the place of God for him, telling him what to say."

So God spoke to Moses, Moses spoke to Aaron, and Aaron spoke to the people. Aaron fulfilled his role well as along as he kept his eyes on God and respected Moses as the true leader of Israel. On a few occasions Aaron lost sight of this fact and allowed himself to believe that it was all about him. His views got crossed as it were. Aaron, called to follow Moses tried to lead him. Aaron, called to lead the people tried to follow them. This as you can imagine did not work out so well for anyone involved.

At Mt. Sinai, Moses was gone to long for the impatient Israelites. The people began to clamor for a God that they could see….the pillar of cloud and fire was not enough. So Aaron the soon to be high priest of God formed a cow from gold. Great. Just what we need. We have the God of the universe on our side, but we need a blazing bovine…just in case.

A few years later Aaron joined his sister Miriam in challenging the authority God had given to their brother Moses. Miriam was struck with leprosy as a result. Aaron had to plead for his sister and his own neck. Just a note, it is never wise to publicly challenge the God ordained leader. If you have an issue, speak in private and in a manner worthy of the office to which your leader has been placed.

Aaron made a lot of mistakes, yet God still chose him to be His first high priest a line that lasted for many years. God blesses those who fulfill their God given offices. It is not that God requires us to never make mistakes. We are human, we will. God requires us to be obedient to Him and submissive to those in authority over us. Strive in your life to fulfill the call God has placed in you. Honor Him in all you do.
